On this ship, I had to hit this button once. I got an alarm at lunch on my pager. Went down, and saw high-temp cooling water spraying from one of the exhaust valves. Would be interested in hearing about how and why you switch fuels and add fuel additives. For instance in ports that have regulations for limiting emissions.
I've not worked at sea for a while, and a lot has changed. You switched generators from HFO (Heavy Fuel Oil) to MDO (Marine Diesel Oil) when near shore, or in the Med. The main engine stayed on HFO unless you were near the US. They just weren't geared up for MDO.
We so desperately need to retrofit these ships to use alternative fuels. HFO is such a disaster.
They will burn biodiesel, with modification for runnier fuels. TBH, they are technically efficient... like a gasoline engine with a wide open throttle is....
