This is what is currently missing from Ecosystem funding. Response thread to: https://twitter.com/cyber_hokie/status/1140792867729879041 … @cyber_hokie 1) Funding research that results in concrete proposals is unattractive 2) An on-ramp of researchers/core-devs requires stability in funding.

ETH 1.x’s problems are not “funding problems.” They’re administrative, logistical, and management problems. Coupled with an inability to articulate needs such that available funds can be responsibly allocated for development. Poorly thought out funding proposals won’t fix this.

Core developer research and dev funding is the primary purpose of the Ethereum Foundation and the majority of reserves. In virtually every other field, research is funded through grants and endowments with strict requirements for cogent proposals and demonstrable progress.

I don’t believe R&D should be funded the same way as public sector programs, via taxes and inflation, especially with far less oversight.

Ethereum is a Public Blockchain and soon we compete against Private Enterprise. As far as funds for R&D go, we are the little fish.

Private blockchains cannot capture the primary value proposition of public blockchains, permissionless access and use. Perhaps the EF needs to fundraise more/better?

Perhaps they do. Also, I wasn't talking about private blockchains.

Did you mean private enterprise developers working on public blockchains? Same way enterprise captures linux devs over the linux foundation?

That’s just a graduation from niche to widely adopted. Enterprises will always win out. Instead of fighting it, why not take that route? I get oversight and corporate hoops arent fun, but they pay, and cover the development where appropriate.
