There a middleground somewhere between releasing new versions that breaks a LOT of existing stuff and stable releases :p
It's worst with Unreal Engine ... At least with Unity, plugins can be updated from a version to another. With UE4 a plugin is compiled for a specific version of the engine. Try to update to Unity 5, then 2017, no reason it will fail.

We made 20 updates from 4.3 to 2017.2 in two years, none of them went 100% well (:
