You don't have to know how it works. Just use Euler, or built-in methods. A Quaternion is a complex number https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaternion

Euler isn't great either. I much prefer systems where you select a vector to look along and a vector to orient towards vertically. Unity's Quaternion library at least provides helpers for that (Quaternion.LookRotation being the simplest to use).
