I've dealt with this interviewing some people w/ reprehensible views. i understand impulse to try and show the mundane side of hate bc there's something to learn from that. but there has to be a THERE there. if not, abort!

went on a walk and thought about the nazi profile. it’s kind of amazing how little the internet factors into it! especially when the reporter says he doesnt understand how he came to be radicalized

This calls to mind Hannah Arendt's phrase "the banality of evil" or to make it germane to this story, the *normalization of evil.* http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article7278.htm pic.twitter.com/96yDHt8B6l
-
The writer should have ended his article with Hannah Arendt's words but it only gave a free podium to a Nazi the same way MSM gave Trump free publicity and air time with no thought to how his rhetoric would free the hate kept hidden by societal standards (for the most part).
-
I really can't understand how that piece was published as it is. Is the
@nytimes so committed to appearing unbiased they can't ask questions that let people expose themselves for what they are? "Hitler was chill?" "the Holocaust was overblown?" The Nazis kept records…
-
Oh! Does critical thinking even exist in US academics?
-
It did when I was there but that was <mumble> years ago…

You said it yourself: there’s value to showing the mundane side of hate. That’s the there that’s there.
-
The only ppl who don’t know the mundanity of hate are those with enough privilege to be insulated from its daily effects.
-
Ok... then this article serves the purpose of informing those people, and has value.
-
Perhaps, if this piece—and those like it—weren’t filling space that might be used to profile those affected by Nazis & those fighting Nazis.

I think his post-mortem does a good job explaining the limits of a reporter's ability to explain something like white supremacists. But yes, maybe this is a story that should have been killed in the cradle.
-
Nah. His post mortem is shameful. He basically admits not asking challenging questionable but still waxes poetic about how it’s all so mysterious. Just not a very good journalist, it seems.
-
Like maybe less about the damn pasta and more hard questions about his Holocaust denial.

if only they spent this much time interviewing those who have to deal with the effects of hate and racism.
