“The pizza effect”: productive cultural appropriation/reinvention. Pizza is more-or-less an Italian-American invention. American tourists in Italy tried to find the authentic original, which didn’t exist, but entrepreneuring locals came to provide it.

Just discovered these "Calvin & Hobbes IRL" photoshops by (from 2012!) and can't get over them. It's like my childhood got remastered in HD....

Fascinating story I ran across reading the history of polio: In 1954, when it was time for large-scale human trials of the vaccine, some researchers were *against* the idea of doing a properly randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial—including Salk himself

Love this. Take a look if you're doing a PhD in NLP and thinking about what to work on next. Take a look if you think "BeRt WiLl SoLvE lAnGuAgE lol!11" and need someone to point you to actual research topics.

The nabla symbol, commonly used in math to represent the gradient of a function ∇f, is so-called because it looks like a harp and the Greek word for the Hebrew or Egyptian form of a harp is "nabla".

10: how did the 5 major get their names? This is slightly tangential to hematology, admittedly, but is a cool story that I’ve been aching to tell since I went through an intense etymology phase many years ago (still have lots of dusty books)./1

Stat mech and thermo are just probability theory and they make so much more sense when you have a proper grasp on probability theory _first_. The rest of this thread is also great.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I was on the rotation to give group meeting during this week's Labsgiving, so I covered our approach to open science and current best practices for software development. You can find my slides here:

A great thread about Softbank, and far more balanced than more recent coverage in the tech and generalist press.

Python tip: Need to import from a file not in the current directory and do not want to install a module (eg for reproducible science)? Use the runpy module Don't hack sys.path

In the last few years, it has become so obvious to me that weak theories are a huge problem in science. My own interests have shifted substantially from merely improving estimators for my favorite problems. I would much rather demonstrate what the right questions ought to be. 1/

🆕 “The Spanish Inquisition”: rationality’s relevance problem. Unknown unknowns are unenumerable, so logic cannot work as advertised. (It’s not altogether useless, though!)

Under communist rule, Poland was exceptionally unequal in nearly everything that mattered. *Wage inequality* was one of the few exceptions. The idea that inequality in Poland is much higher now than then is a statistical artefact -- one that relies on ignoring capital income 1/4
