I sometimes think about this when I read about how some of the great generalist physicists like Fermi and Bethe could attack any problem because they had a memorized, ready list of constants and formulae in their minds. Facts create adaptable, minimalist problem-solving networks.

Big agree. But I think I might distinguish "known" from "memorized"; so many people assume that "memorized" implies "learned by heart without understanding". (Which is their bad, but it makes effective communication harder.)

I think memorization is absolutely vital. It has its own utility and time. The trivium emphasises this quite a bit.

Not sure how to put it into words precisely but having those connected islands of knowledge within you adds to a feeling of personal solidity somehow. It's a very important thing to develop that solidity around some subject. It shows.

Reminds me of the classic book "The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci." Prior to the widespread availability of printed matter, people used all sorts of powerful techniques to memorize vast quantities of information and text.

This is something I try to impart to my students. I tell them that there's not a lot of memorization in chemistry. But the stuff there is to be memorized REALLY needs to. That it'll make them better problem solvers.

Highly recommend The Book of Memory by Mary Carruthers, from ancient to medieval models of memory as spatial (cell)/connected (chain), thoughtful discussions of models for memory & the "memory arts" Also this on Locke's commonplace books touches on Google:https://twitter.com/permutans/status/1222908611380285440 …pic.twitter.com/qjB2DfbOdD
