15-year-old or so kid at the neighboring table in the restaurant yesterday: "America has a weird relationship with science - they're so good at it and yet they hate it". A 15-year-old totally gets what no member of Congress does.

I think it’s more that people love science when it supports their predetermined political positions, but discount it or hate it when it doesn’t. Typically under the guise of the scientists being funded by corporations or needing to “manufacture” crisis to keep their jobs.
