Interesting. cc: "current studies have a bias for high-abundant proteins...parameters optimized towards a pseudo 1st order kinetics model result in a significant increase in the detection of lower-abundant proteins on a proteome-wide scale."

Meena has exactly the same core issue as ELIZA: it doesn't build a model of what it or the interlocutor has said, and it often contradicts what happened a few turns earlier. Topic without understanding in 1965, topic without understanding in 2020. Here's a sample:

My daughter's college friend is the first of her own family to go to college, and I can confirm that they are indeed a family in need. Surgery to correct a congenital ankle problem has them in a tight spot. Any RTs welcome!

“In return for that money, the CCP requires its researchers to turn over intellectual property to which they have access, as well as to sign agreements preventing them from disclosing the results of work conducted under Chinese patronage.“ What could possibly go wrong?

interesting weave of recent foreign influence focus with a number of threads that have been discussed in the research community for years, now:

This is exciting! Remember hearing about this many years ago but now it's getting done for real: basecall in real time and stop sequencing the molecules you don't care about by ejecting them from the pore.

First astrology, now “energy healing” and other Paltrovian quackery: The New York Times has become strangely sympathetic to pseudoscience.

I just finished going through all the drafts of ' Uncle Tungsten, as well as the production/publication/publicity material: 14 boxes in all. Though I swore I wouldn't do it, I ended up "turning every page," as Robert Caro advises.

Call me crazy for thinking this, but I get the feeling that it may be a good idea for the president to aspire to slightly - teensy, weensy bit is all I’m thinking about here - higher standards than the average American.

Ultimately I think one of the most promising things will be an automated journal submission process that simply doesn't allow papers to be submitted unless there's accompanying full data and code. The community needs to work on these kinds of peer-review validation tools.

And the hype from the investors pointed out ("Pharma's AlphaGo moment") is just absurd and indicates an abdication of responsibility. There needs to be a co-evolving circle where scientists and investors police each other, otherwise the hype will get completely out of hand.

The kinds of metrics they are urging for generative model papers are ones the comp chem community has been discussing for years: full disclosure of training sets and similar molecules, comparison with simpler techniques. A feeling of deja vu many times over.

Thread: This succinct and commonsense critique of generative models for molecular design by and Mark Murcko makes me pleased and saddened. Pleased because it makes sense, saddened because it's very much a "we have seen this movie before" feeling
