In Chinese & Japanese there's an expression 'A frog in a well never knows the vast ocean' based on the
#Taoist story from Zhuangzi. It's a reminder to be humble & accept thay the world is vast & our knowledge limited, so we must not assume to know everything .#FolkloreThursdaypic.twitter.com/rSJcPdMX9w

Norse tales told of a magical pebble hidden in a raven’s nest, that would make the finder invisible if they held it in their mouth. However, if the power was misused, it would turn them into an owl!

In Japanese folklore an oni is a
#yokai, and a kind of ferocious demon similar to ogres. They usually have horns, big fangs & sharp claws. Although their skin colour can vary, it is common to see them portrayed as red or blue skinned, club welding monsters. 1/2#FolkloreGetsEvilpic.twitter.com/pN6T92qRLt

Kintaro is a folk hero from Japan. Raised by a mountain witch he had superhuman strength & befriended animals in the mountains. He's depicted here refereeing a wrestling match between a monkey & a rabbit.

In the folklore of Indigenous Australia, Mimis (or Mimih Spirits) are fairy-like beings of Arnhem Land. They are said to have very thin & elongated bodies & are mostly found living in rock crevices. It is believed that they taught the local people how to paint.

Theseus, like many heroes in Greek mythology, relied on the help of a woman. In this case it was Ariadne who fell in love with Theseus & helped him overcome the Minotaur. He later abandoned her on a rock to be found by Dionysus.

A Hag Stone is simply a stone with a natural hole through it. In folk magic systems, these are often believed to ward off the dead, curses, witches, sickness, and nightmares. They are also used as windows or doorways to see 'otherworlds'.

In Japanese folklore yonaki ishi are stones or boulders that are heard loudly crying in the night. Some tales explain that the rocks are posessed by the spirits of murdered people seeking revenge although sometimes it is the spirit of the rock itself that cries.
