The "socialist calculation problem" had always been a red herring. Yes, optimizing an economy is NP-hard, but most NP hard problems in the real world have computationally feasible approximate solutions, hence why traveling-salesman is hard but delivery services still work.

The limits of planned economies have never had to do with literal computational efficiency issues. It's more about the limits of structured discourse as a way of eliciting and aggregating knowledge.

I doubt it. A quantum computer is incredibly fast, yes, but it isn't magic. It all comes down to the programs you run on it. You need an accurate model provided with accurate data, both of which are quite tricky to get right.
-
It's not just that. A quantum computer is not just a faster computer. It's a faster computer for a very restricted set if problems. But most importantly, the socialist calculation debate is largely about choosing values. So no, computers won't solve it.

problem is sorting out preferences, not the actual calculation read shalizi http://crookedtimber.org/2012/05/30/in-soviet-union-optimization-problem-solves-you/ …

But also, the calculation itself can become intractable and quantum doesn't change that significantly.

Ask anyone who’s been involved in managing a large firm’s supply chain whether they use market systems to get supplies to their franchises, and the answer is “are you insane, we obviously use this big algorithm which tells us where to send things!” It’s entirely centrally planned

Love this conversation. So this is actually my job and that’s not quite true. Like of course each Poppa Johns isn’t bidding against one another, but Poppa Johns collectively is bidding for pepperonis and prorating that cost against each sites consumption
