    Adobe used 125 MongoDB servers to run their activity feed. It was replaced by 48 Cassandra servers. Now it runs on 3 (THREE!) servers of Neo4j. With more data (yet smaller disk footprint), higher load and more functionality. The scalability of a native graph database. 💪💪💪

    If your product has an Activity Feed, you must take a look at this video from going from dozens of servers to 3 instances, from TBs to GBs :

    why it is so hard to *explain* how TDD works so well, and so easy to convince if u can just get their fingers on a keyboard for a couple of days.

    It’s amazing how often trying to test something leads to the conclusion that it’s the wrong shape.

    There is nothing wrong with Up Front Design. Indeed, it is absolutely necessary. Just don’t do too much. A day or two. Maybe three. And then keep doing it as you write tests and code. And never believe it. Up front designs are necessary, but wrong.

    A developer that doesn’t run tests is not much of a developer. An infrastructure that doesn’t enable developers to run tests is not much of an infrastructure.

    I finally managed to completely isolate the errant function from all of the explicit and implicit database calls it made. So now the database is mocked, and the tests can run without the database. Nice.
