The poppy thing seems to me to have been appropriated by white nationalism as a nostalgic imperialist loyalty oath. There’s a very short step from commemorating war dead and fundraising for charity, and glorifying xenophobic violence. https://twitter.com/jrc1921/status/1298184377365671936 …

We seem to "fetishise" our armed services in general. Charities like the Poppy Appeal or Help for Heroes are widely championed, every now and then someone floats the idea of national service for the zillionth time...and it all feeds into what you mention there. It's...creepy.

I'm struggling to find more precise terms than "fetishise" and "creepy" but that's the best I can come up with. It's this mixture of nostalgia and putting military service personnel on a moral pedestal that just makes me feel deeply uncomfortable

Surely the train companies should donate the cost of redecorating their trains rather than spending money on poppyfying them?

There is traditionally an intellectual vacuum in this area because progressives feel uneasy about the whole idea of nationhood and a standing army. As they don't engage, the void is filled, largely uncontested, by whoever is willing to fill the void, and they're always bigots.

Coming from the US, with its own brand of toxic patriotism, I quickly figured out that the poppy is right up there with the St. George's Flag as an indicator of a certain type of political outlook.

It never used to be. The Poppy Appeal used to be something supported by pretty much everyone in the UK. It wasn't really viewed as political. Now some newsreaders refuse to wear them because they feel they are too political. That's grim.

The way the Poppy Appeal has been hijacked by the right and by brands makes me sick.

I agree. In our twelve years in the UK the poppy thing always felt more like a reminder of the the good ‘ole day of British might and empire, rather than a reminder of the horror and devastation of war.
