Lost in the noise today is this terrifying detail: Apple can update the Secure Enclave without wiping the data on ithttps://twitter.com/dguido/status/700174385685143552 …

I made 1 final update to the Apple vs FBI post, clarifying that Apple can update the SE and what that means https://blog.trailofbits.com/2016/02/17/apple-can-comply-with-the-fbi-court-order/ …

@csoghoian so there's already a back door in the encryption and Apple is no hero. thanks.

@csoghoian @dguido Does anyone know how long the key in the Secure Enclave is? It still needs to be cracked.

      2. Dan Guido ‏@dguido Feb 18

@nyxgeek @csoghoian It's a randomly generated 256-bit AES key. It's a lot easier to guess the passcode, comparatively.

.@csoghoian sorry but although the author of the article now believe updating SE firmware, there are no details why he does

@csoghoian Hopefully such an update requires user approval, which requires unlocking the device. If so, not as big of a problem.

@csoghoian @interfluidity @dguido what else would you expect, user to lose all data every update?

@csoghoian @dguido this is an astute observation. Does it mean that Apple products are in fact back-doored already?

      2. Dan Guido ‏@dguido Feb 18

@lgbral @csoghoian Apple products have always been updateable with a properly signed firmware image. Is this a backdoor? Perspective matters

@csoghoian He provides no evidence it can be updated without a password. Every single update I've ever done required a password to continue

@csoghoian Could Apple update the Secure Enclave to erase its secrets before the next update? Or would that be a hardware issue?

@csoghoian 'now I believe this is not true' is the weak phrase in this argument - hate to point that out, so where is the absolute proof?

@csoghoian turning off the "block a user after 3 wrong tries" feature is as simple as changing a simple configuration setting.
