I think Trump's approval rating rises as Trump himself becomes less of a story and culture wars become more of a story. At base, probably 45+% of the country approves of Trump as general in the culture wars.
35% or less of the country approves of Trump as a person exercising the powers of the presidency, with the responsibilities that entails.

So when Trump makes himself the story, his approval rating goes down. When he fades, the background radiation of racism and sexism and bigotry in America brings his approval back up.

So the challenge for Democrats becomes: how do I make Trump the story, without succumbing to his ability to make it about how I tried to make Trump the story? Bc the latter just becomes more culture war nonsense.
