The themes of Infinity War were straightforwardly liberal individualist and anti-collectivist. The extremes were Cap’s insistence on each individual life at any cost and Thanos’ complete disregard for individuals in favor of collective needs.
It actually (ugh) reminded me of Ross Douthat’s thing about the families with kids who are ruled brain-dead but want to use their resources to keep trying to save their loved ones even though the medical establishment says it won’t work and is a poor use of resources.
And there’s a parallel bc superheroes, like rich ppl, have more resources to save those they love. (Of course, superheroes, directly opposite to rich ppl, also put themselves and their loved ones at far greater risk.)
Anyway I keep seeing dumb takes on how superheroes are inherently un-progressive and that is wrong. Huge mainstream entertainment like this always reinforces the dominant ideology, which in America is liberalism.
Also interesting bc I think Cap insisted on every life for emotional reasons (and bc the plot needed to get them to Wakanda, lol), whereas Dr. Strange clearly did what he did wrt Tony NOT bc feeeelings but bc Tony will vindicate that decision practically in A4.
Also interesting that both BP and IW are deeply interested in probing the limits and logics of liberalism. Neither can find it wanting, but their gentle, affirming probes are part of the same spirit as the more violent reactions against liberalism on the left and right.
Interested too in how Chris Pratt indirectly served as a foil for Cap. Starlord is like Cap’s values applied less successfully than Cap himself.
Also I am excited for my precious baby spidey to lead half the squad in A4 alongside Chadwick, but NOT excited for Chris Pratt to show up again. Yuck.
