I love to mock Alicia Keys for her vocal struggles but it's only because she lowkey broke my heart with Element of Freedom. I have never tried harder to like a bad work of art.

Bc like... Diary was IT. Diary was like... the platonic ideal of what an album should be to me circa age 12. Diary was the first album I'd play all the way to the end and start it right back at the beginning after.

Alicia gave us Diary, If I Ain't Got You, AND You Don't Know My Name on the same damn album. And let's not even talk about how hot the whole damn b-side of the album was. So Simple? Sampsonite Man? maaaaaaaan...

And like... was As I Am quite at the level of Diary? No. But it was enough. It gave me what I needed. And I tried to get the same thing out of Element of Freedom but I swear it was like drawing blood from a stone, y'all.

I can get with a prince impression but a BAD prince impression? When I realized homegirl's voice cracked, on her own record, on a song she wrote?? Y'all my feelings were HURT.

I don’t even get why she decided to go in a Prince direction bc when she links up with that old school R&B Gladys Knight/Ashford and Simpson/Motown vibe??? MAGIC. She was giving us like a sequel to Aretha on Rose is Still A Rose and it was perfect.
