This is not down to problems that they have as people, but a) 45 and 43 both were/are very bad presidents and lots of cognitive dissonance arises from defending them
One day conservatives are going to figure out people aren’t mad at them because of some mystical identity category of conservative. People are mad at them because they are wrong significantly more often than more liberal folks are.

And b) the contours of their coalition are such that they are beholden to people who believe a lot of things about both economics and identity that simply aren’t true, and their ideas have to at least be compromises with that part of their coalition.
