Free speech and free thought do not mean free from consequence. They mean free from certain kinds of consequences. Now, social media and the increasing voice given to a more diverse group of people means the palette of consequences has changed.
But historically, the least and last thing that speech and thought are protected from is other speech and other thoughts, the first and foremost physical violence/loss of life/imprisonment.

Perhaps the ethics of what speech and thought ought to be free from will change over time, but those two poles ought to remain the same, I would say.
