Especially in an age of social media where it’s easier for a small number of voices to be heard broadly, it’s easier to gamble on the chance of defeating your political opponents than to acquiesce to selling out parts of your coalition.

Well. I personally think “the wall,” stupid as it is, is not a bad compromise bc it is a mostly-symbolic response to a purely symbolic complaint. We can have the Statue of Liberty in the north for liberals and the Wall in the south for conservatives, lol.
