What strange bedfellows history makes. Christians who HATED and actively persecuted the Enlightenment and “disenchantment” and rationalism and deism now ADORE the enlightenment bc they think liberal humanist values can be traced back to Christianity’s influence on “the West.”
Perhaps the issue is western Christians need to understand that the fruit of Christ’s message needn’t be tied to the moral success or failure of so-called western civilization.
Perhaps religions do not birth civilizations! Perhaps religions merely survive civilizations, beneath the heaps and heights of cities, taking human beings, embodied souls, and washing them, cleaning them, preparing them for this life and the next.
