Or, once, I suppose, to escape (“light out to the territories”) but the escape to the West has been more or less deconstructed into non-functionality, thank god, because it was a very very very wretched myth.

Although, in a perverse way, it is the most revolutionary of the set. But it is a permanently individualized revolution: “In New York you can be a new man,” which I suppose drains it of revolutionary potential.
