On one hand it makes me think, "wow, gender is so sexy, how can we preserve gender and take away its sting?"
I am having a moment of deep fascination with Harry Styles' "Woman."

But then the next thought is, no, how do we create a cultural form for what this song is about as full and rich as the word "woman" without attaching this "maddening subject of desire" framing to 50% of the world's population?

And then I started thinking about how you make a music video as sexy as the song is, and I think it would have to be directed by a woman.

And then I thought---well to some extent that's true it has to be someone who has moved through the world as a woman bc the song is playing (very successfully) with tropes that in the wrong hands say being possessive is normal and right for men, right?

But then in another way, the director of that video simply has to be anyone, regardless of gender (essence, performance, expression, identity, etc), who has ever wanted to be a maddening object of desire.

I could write an essay about this song for sure.

And also let's get into the lalalalalalalalas! Which are like... aggressively childish! Even girly! But they're also Harry's voice! This song is about gender!!
