Demi Lovato in Sorry Not Sorry found a way to revive a basic logic that goes back to "Respect," which is vocal skill as playful power aka stunting.

Jazzy never does it but I hope one day she finds herself there. JHud tried to do it all over her disco album but her voice always sounds effortful (which nearly tanks Demi too) and effortful is the opposite of stunting.

And really it goes back to Ella Fitzgerald and before, but with Ella it was about a certain refined, genteel skill, but skill is still effortful, achieved, intentional. Since Aretha you have to give the illusion of naturalness. I didn't acquire this skill, I AM this skill.
