Of course, the corollary requires us to tackle the ethical question head-on: do we append a similar nuance to our celebration of a queer hero despite the fact that many Americans see queer heroes in a negative light?
How do leaders in a diverse country celebrate someone like Billy Graham who was such a blessing to so many, and yet, perpetuated harm against other folks (I'm thinking of queer ppl in particular but others well) who are just as valid and important?

I suppose if I looked back at, say, Margaret Sanger's obit, I would probably see that attempt to balance celebrating her work against the many complaints about her, valid and invalid.
