This stock market situation is a great example of the asymmetries between Rs and Ds. If the stock market had fallen like this in 2015, every word out of every Republican's mouth would have been about "the failed economic policies of President Barack Obama."
But on the other hand, I worry that our refusal to use the right's messaging tactics betrays a misunderstanding of how minds and communication work.

I think, in general, it is easier to believe an assertion than to disbelieve it. So there is rhetorical/persuasive value simply in repeating a simple, uncomplicated assertion over and over and over, even when it obfuscates a more complex and more correct narrative.

I'm afraid we need to learn to lead with "The stock market is falling thanks to the reckless short-term economic policies of President Donald Trump, policies that hurt you and apparently don't even help the corporations they were designed to help!"

and THEN you can follow up with "of course there are many forces at play here and the stock market never tells the whole story about the economy." But make sure you finish up with, "but the story it's telling us right now---it's not good for President Trump or my R colleagues."
