I wonder if our white supremacist regime is more animated, at base, by a simple hatred of nonwhite people, or by the fear of their own conscience?

I think really they are less desperate to Make America White Again, and more desperate to make themselves white again—white as in pure, white as in unstained, white as in not guilty.

“If nonwhites are humans, what does that make us, given the way we’ve treated them for centuries?” I think that is the true motive for Trumpism. Not even anything as high-minded as a sense of injured merit. A fear of losing their own self-made righteousness.
