This is really interesting bc actually a corporation that invents a fictional universe and markets toys based on it is the exact opposite of cultural appropriation in that: a) the "creators" maintain control, and b) the creators profit off of each instance. https://twitter.com/eveewing/status/958379777806819328 …
imo, the two problems with cultural appropriation are: a) a dominant culture's distorted idea of a minority culture becoming the dominant idea of that minority culture (sometimes even for young people OF that culture) b) ppl of the minority culture getting cut out of the $$.

If all the white artists and businessmen who ripped off black artists in the 50s and 60s had given credit and compensation to the people whose work and style they ripped off, it'd still be bogus that you have to be white to get rich off of things a black person invented...

But the moral fault would be with the white audiences who could accept black artists, not the white artists who took something black and added something else (whiteness) that made it more marketable.

The system would be unjust still, but the white artist/businesses, by compensating the original creators, would have put themselves in the best possible ethical position, and imo, shouldn't get dragged.
