People wildly underestimate the psychological wages of having a normative position on any issue, and the effort it takes to maintain a counterhegemonic position in spite of the omnidirectional barrage of counterprogramming from the normative, dominant position.
Mostly for good, imo, bc the number of good, counterhegemonic ideas that are embedded in mainstream culture are far outweighed by the number of bad, prohegemonic ideas in mainstream culture. So creating space for ideas don’t fit the mainstream will do more good than harm.
