Still furious that Denzel was too Christian to do Gabe’s ending moment correctly in the Fences movie.

I’ve been crying about how beautiful that scene is for years and then they just... didn’t do it.

When I do my production of Fences, after Gabe does the dance, Troy is going to calmly walk across the stage from stage right to stage left and everyone on stage (or maybe just Gabe) is going to watch him. And then Gabe’s final line and scene.

But Denzel was dramaturgically correct in not doing it, because it is an explicitly anti-Christian moment in the text, parallel to Herald Loomis’ “you clean with blood?” moment. Transcending of European Christian spirituality to move into an African symbolist spirituality.

And the African symbolist spirituality (also the theatrical religion of August Wilson’s plays most fully embodied by the soul washing in Gem of the Ocean) is shown to be more efficacious than the European Christian spirituality the characters start out in.
