I think he was nominated and won because we fetishize a) melancholy, b) virtuosity, and c) whiteness, and he checks all three boxes. Also Beck has MUCH better albums. It was a lifetime achievement Grammy, basically, which is fine, but not when the alternative was so excellent.

I mean... I just think we're measuring artist by "how technically difficult to do was the thing you did" rather than "did you make something new and creative that people could relate to."

I go by the latter, and imo, there was nothing on that Beck album that wasn't on plenty of other sad boy indie post-Radiohead albums. Whereas to me, say, Rocket was a new take on a Prince sex ballad. (But also I think Prince sex ballads in general >> sad boy post-Radiohead.)
