Also just a vague feeling from blockwalking/knocking doors but I wonder if identity-based appeals are less successful now than they were in 2008, or if class cleavages are more relevant within identity groups, etc.

Politics in 2018 are all about credibility and trust. It is very difficult to build trust within a diverse, sometimes hostile coalition.
