Rather than merely being an occasion to point out their wretched hypocrisy (which of course can be fun since their primary role in the culture for decades was to call others evil), this should be a sobering opportunity for reflection for the rest of us.

This is a clear example of why it is important to guard your heart, guard your theology, guard your ideology, because sooner or later, something will come that tests every chink in your armor, and if you aren't prepared you'll find yourself endorsing what you once condemned.

I don't think that's a weakness that is somehow unique to white evangelicals. I think the lust for white supremacy is unique to white evangelicals, and I think the obsession with a violent masculinity is perhaps unique to American Christianity.

But that basic willingness to put culture over ethics, us over them, my comfort over your needs, my ideology over your life? That's been with us since the Pharisees and long, long before. And we can all fall into it if we're not careful.

That said, that's no excuse for white evangelical christians not to take a serious look around at how Beyonce and Jay-Z have a more serious ethical response to marital infidelity than a church that dares to put the name of Jesus Christ on its doors.
