Like SZA is right when she says it's not just a side-chick anthem, bc that reduces it to being just a positive song about how great it is to be a side chick, which is... not at all what that song is.

Like a lot of great art, it's about accurately rendering both a difficult situation and how the person in that situation THINKS about it, how they frame it to themselves, how they make sense of it, you know?

"I know when I'm selfish, I know when I'm desperate." SZA's self-consciousness/self-awareness is why she's so brilliant. The neat turns of phrase like "highkey your dick is weak, buddy" and "My man is my man is your man, heard that's her man too" are the flashy side effects.

Maybe I need to get really deep into Ctrl and write something in praise of SZA. What is good about SZA is really the same as a lot of very very old-school literature. (and I don't just mean the words bc the exploration of character/perspective happens through the music too).
