Also, a brief historical question: It is my strong inclination to believe that the Democrats didn't hold the House through 1994 through economic populism but by conceding to dixiecrats, which fell apart when Clinton openly reached out to black voters and elevated women.

However, I would be VERY interested in learning the historical evidence on both sides as to whether conceding to racists or delivering economic benefits to the working class was more important in holding together the Dem House majority for so long.

Oh I should also say, social conservatives and the "culture wars" played an important role in finishing the process of converting the "solid South" to the Republican Party that obviously began in 1964 with LBJ signing the Civil Rights Act.
