Sigh. Whose job is it, in 2018, to explain Americans to each other in language intelligible and respectful to everyone who is in the room? Politicians? Cultural figures? Oprah? The news media? Pop stars? TV shows? Religious leaders?

I don't know whose job it is, but I know that skill and service is vitally, DESPERATELY needed, and we need to elevate those who are capable of threading that needle and earning trust from many of the distinct cultures and interests that make up America.

and I know even that is a half-measure and it's immoral and it's not right bc why should we earn the trust of people who hate us and want us to suffer? How can we be in dialogue with that? But at the same time: how can we not?
