Rock destroyed itself by betraying its black roots in rhythmic complexity. Chuck Berry's whole sound is built on the drummer swinging 8ths and rhythm guitar playing them straight.
"Heavy" rock (and punk to some extent) flattened this out into aggressive straight 8ths as a symbol of forthrightness and/or masculinity. Imo, that killed the engine that propels rock music.

also I just... do not think really aggressive hard straight eighths is an interesting sound? Four on the floor works but I hypothesize that it's often four in the bass/drums against tresillo in elsewhere in the arrangement.
