But seriously, not to reduce everything to the Great Moral Stains of the West but how can you possibly think that "we can't possibly call that evil, everybody does it!!" is an acceptable moral response in a country that defines its history by slavery and defeating Nazism?

guess what else "everybody" was doing? Owning slaves and being Nazis. Segregation was normals. Colonialism was (and is) normal. Turning people away at the emergency room was normal. Sexual assault in warzones was (and is) normal.

We just have such astonishingly small moral imaginations to think that basically every society in history had massive, egregious moral failings but nothing that is ordinary to us could possibly be offensive to morality.
