Some are saying "oh but the tax cut DOES benefit real people for a couple years." The problem is, the United States is borrowing 1.5 Trillion dollars, or more, and handing most of it to rich people.

So yeah, you get a little---but think of where that money could go. It could go to funding healthcare, it could go to improving our safety net, it could go to climate change preparations, it could go to buying emission heavy cars, or guns, or etc.

They aren't GIVING you anything. They are taking out a loan, in your name, and then giving all the money in that loan to the rich.

Now I won't try to lie and say "you're gonna have to pay back that money someday!!" cause that ain't quite true. Sovereign debt, especially for the largest economy in the world, isn't like personal finance.

But it IS true that even if it's only in terms of politics, borrowing this money to give away to rich people will make it harder to borrow money tomorrow for things we actually need, things that actually help people.

So no, the Republicans did not give you a gift. They borrowed money, in your name, and gave you the teeniest, tiniest fragment of it, for a couple years, while they gave themselves and their rich friends the lion's share of it, now and forever.
