damn, I ain't gotta feel anything for the dude because the patriarchy already assumes that the very woman he is in the thing with will feel an inordinate and disproportionate and unnecessary amount of empathy for him.
like, the story is all about "man, sometimes women are out here with so much empathy for dudes that don't even treat them well, sometimes more empathy than they have for themselves." And your response is "we need more empathy for men."
like... think about the millions upon millions upon millions of male protagonists, not in a random new yorker short story but in The Great And Classic Works Of Literature where we are NEVER invited to feel empathy for the woman, we ONLY care about her impact on the man.
I just don't see where the solution for that is "let's spend more of our emotional energy on men especially when we're discussing a work by a woman that purports to tell us about the female experience."
