God, okay I have become a complete stan for this damn Cat Person story. STAN. The moment when she realizes the fantasy boyfriend can never exist is the apex of the whole story for me.
Because it flips the whole thing on its head. Instead of it being "oh look how much women suffer because of the way we socialize gender" it's "oh look at how much fun and happiness we could be having if we socialized gender better."

and it's just like... there ought to be a word for the kind of fond disappointment you feel when you think about something that you know before, during, and after will never happen, but what a nice what if.
