People in general are more likely to be scared of a specific group than of the general idea of having people of lots of different groups around.
Makes sense! And even if social pressure is responsible for some of the difference on the diversity question, the comparison is still pretty valid. (You could argue there's more social pressure here bc more diversity here, but surely not enough to erase the whole difference).
