Idk if this is a strange thing to say and I might fuck it up but: Upon feeling attraction to a person of the same gender---or for that matter, of any gender---there are a WIDE spectrum of valid things to do, even a wide spectrum of HEALTHY things to do.

Obviously not meaning like... "I saw Tim the other day and he looked hot" but I mean when you realize, at any age, that the spectrum of your sexual and/or romantic attraction is either a) non-normative, or b) just different than what you thought/expected/assumed.

Identifying as gay/bi/pan/queer is not the only valid or healthy response to that experience.

I would say identifying as "straight" upon realizing your potential for attraction is non-normative is... likely to be less healthy, because "straight" like "white" is an exclusionary identity, defined more by what it's not than what it is.

but even "straight" if you don't clench your fist around it too tight, can be a perfectly healthy label for you after you've had that non-normative/broadening experience of attraction.
