The needs of Connecticut or Rhode Island are virtually indistinguishable from those of New York at this point. Or at least, the interest divergence there is much smaller than that between blacks and whites, or men and women, or Christians and Muslims, etc.
And you can tell bc Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York consistently vote for the same politicians. Not so for those other groups I mentioned.
and fine, say we can't get all the way to something like the Connecticut Compromise but for the culture wars.
How far CAN we get down the road to a state that sees part of its role as balancing the interests of a diverse citizenry?
There's a political POV from which this is a contradiction in terms but I think it is valuable and important to imagine what the counter-hegemonic state looks like (regardless of your preferred economic system, actually)
