One of the most disappointing things about the Dems over the last few decades was how many adopted the "If gov't was a household" rhetoric. It means they never understood the economic principles that underpinned the political proj. of the left at all.
To be clear: given the US' current financial/economic position, it's not bad to finance policy with deficit spending. It is bad to borrow 1.5 trillion from the world in the name of the people, and then hand it out to all your donors and lobbyists.
