I... don't think everybody chilled out about racial stuff in California, lol. And if they did, given the state of California's prison system, it was clearly B2.
but like... at what point did this chilling happen and how is it related in time to a) the Rodney King riots and b) Oscar Grant's murder?
About a decade after Rodney King, I'd say.
That, and exclusionary housing policy (which gets sold as ant-racist!!). But I mean, California is a LOT better than in the 80s and 90s...like, a LOT. Surely that counts for something?
absolutely. Counts for a lot. These less-racist coastal places are TONS better than a lot of other places. Not enough that I'd consider it healthy grounds for all Californians to warmly embrace America.
