If you want to make people less bigoted, give them a common team identity and make them work together. Shaming doesn't generally work.
But it does work to make them act less bigoted, which is of benefit to the people who have to work and live alongside them.
For that matter, the team identity part and the shame part are probably in a feedback loop. Team = more contact with shameful behavior.
Well, I've always believed that punishment is a great short-term motivator, but long-term motivators have to be positive stuff.
I think it's better to say shame is a continuously applied short term motivator but yeah, you have to keep applying it for it to work.
I think punishment wears off. Spank a lid for everything and he gets used to being spanked. Americans seem not to understand this principle, in general. We love MOAR PUNISH
If you want to see he effective discipline works, watch a Japanese parent. Constant gentle admonishment and positive motivation. Produces the best-behaved kids on Earth!
Yeah. Punishment requires a clear line, which I readily admit Team Social Justice lacks---like all novel ideologies when they start out!
Also hey! If you wanna get all the professors out here to give gentle admonition to racists from their position of authority I'm all for it.
