It wasn't just his election, it was his election after losing whites by large margins. Hispanics were the median voter, which scared lots of white people into buying the "brown is the new white" theory.
I wonder if Obama's reelection in 2012 was as big a shock for racists as Bush's reelection in 2004 was for liberals.

Where liberals shocked by Bush's reelection? I was shocked by Trump for sure, but Bush and Kerry polled neck and neck. I remember being very sad, but not shocked.
