12/I've always identified with the cultural left. And I believe that some sort of social justice movement is America's only way forward.

13/In the '00s, and up until maybe 3 years ago, I still saw utopian visions emerging from - and being embraced by - social justice spaces.

14/Watch any Obama speech. Or just watch Legend of Korra or Parks and Recreation, for that matter. That was a vision I believed in.

15/But from maybe 2014 onward, the (generalized) social justice movement feels far more negative in tone - all denunciations, no utopia.

16/There seems to be a race, on Twitter and FB and elsewhere, to find new things to denounce and more strident ways to denounce them.

17/But I have no idea where it ends up. Is the social justice movement still aiming for the Obama vision? Or has it given up on that?

18/Does the cultural left now intend simply to hack and chop away at modern society? Is the struggle now the goal, rather than the means?

19/Is American culture now divided into movements that have no idea of what they want to build, and just want to fight?
