I used to walk around the UWS getting Looks from white ppl, consciously comforting myself with how much $$ of electronics were in my bag.
The racial boogeyman growing up was never the polite "colorblind" racist---we Assimilated Negroes knew all about how to deal with them---
It was always the fear of East Texas Cletus, whose culture we could not mimic, who had a potential for violence the colorblind ones did not.
It's difficult to parse the privilege from the classist ideology from the legitimate survival tactic.
Also fuck it wasn't just middle class negroes who felt that way about Cletus vs Connor. Plenty of us were "working class" at most.
And yeah a lot of it is problematic and a lot of it we need to grow past but...
If you've never lived in a country that still isn't 100% certain you're a human being not a beast of burden... you don't get it.
If you've never been expected to prove again and again that you're a human, not only for yourself but for ur whole race... you don't get it.
(I feel like maybe I was too subtle about the heavy layers of irony and self-criticism and self-deprecation in some of these tweets...)
